Everything that floats

The boat label is wide on purpose. It gathers the naval category and anything tagged or titled boat or ship, so a rowboat and a battleship sit on the same shelf. What they share is the feel of moving on water: momentum that takes a while to shed, a turn that leans, waves that push you off line. The racing games use that for speed — jet skis and speedboats on a buoy course, drifting through turns and catching air off a wake. The sims use it for care: dock a ferry, guide a cargo ship into a narrow harbor, tow a barge without hitting the pier. The battle games give the hull cannons and armor and put an enemy fleet on the horizon. And the survival titles put you on a raft with a hook and a hungry shark, which is the survival games loop with the ground taken away. The racing games hub has the speedboats beside the cars.

The pirate end is its own mood, and it is a large one. Racing, steering and sinking

The racers play like any driving game with worse brakes. Accelerate, steer, and learn that a boat keeps sliding after you turn the wheel, so the line into a corner starts earlier than on tarmac. Waves add a bounce that can throw a jump, and the better games use weather — a chop, a swell, a wake from a rival — as the track. Jet skis are the nimble end and the big powerboats the heavy one; both are on keyboard arrows on a desktop and tilt or on-screen buttons on a phone. The sims are the opposite discipline. Throttle and rudder are separate, a ship turns from the stern, and stopping means reversing the engine well before the dock. Docking games score by how gently you touch and how squarely you sit, and the satisfaction is the same as a perfect parallel park in car parking games.

The battle games run from arcade to strategic. The arcade ones are a top-down ship with a cannon on each side, enemy boats circling, and a health bar; broadside, turn, broadside. The strategic ones show a whole fleet on a grid and let you position, upgrade and fire in turns, and they border on strategy games. The classic pen-and-paper guessing game — call a square, hit or miss — is on the shelf too and is one of the better two-player choices. The sinking games are the odd ones out: a ship going down, passengers to evacuate, a deck that tilts further every minute, or a raft to build from floating debris before the shark notices you. They are tense in a way none of the racers are, and they share their nerves with war games and their crafting with the survival shelf.

Calm water and rough

Boat games cover every temperament. The fishing trips, the canal cruises and the cartoon ferries are among the gentlest games on the site, with no violence and nothing to lose; children play them alone. The racers add competition but no harm. The naval battles involve cannon fire and ships going down, but the tone is almost always toy-like, and the survival games with a shark are more tense than graphic. A parent can go by the thumbnail: a smiling tug is one thing, a warship on fire is another. Adults who want a long session should try the sims and the fleet strategy, which reward planning; those who want ten minutes should pick a race.
