Anything with wings or rotors

The flying label is broad on purpose. At one end are the simulators — a cockpit, a throttle, pitch and roll, a runway to find and a landing that the game grades — and the helicopters, which hover, drift and are harder to keep still than anything with wings. In the middle are the arcade flights: glide a paper plane as far as it will go, thread a jet through rings, fly a rocket up and manage the fuel. At the far end are the combat games — dogfights, bombing runs, side-scrolling shooters with a plane where the ship would be — which share more with the shooting shelf than with the simulators.

The space end of the same idea, with no air to fly through, is under space games; the shooters with a plane in them overlap shooting games and the historical campaigns war games; the feathered fliers have their own bird games hub.

Pitch, roll, throttle

On a keyboard a flight game uses the arrows or WASD for pitch and roll, a pair of keys for the throttle and often the mouse for the camera or the guns. The simulators expect you to learn that pulling up too hard bleeds speed and that a landing is a slow, flat approach with the throttle almost closed; the arcade flights forgive all of that and just want you to steer. Helicopters add a collective — up and down independent of forward — and a minute of hovering practice is time well spent before any mission.

On a phone the arcade fliers are the natural fit: tilt to bank, a single button to fire or boost, portrait or landscape as the title prefers. The full simulators work on a tablet with on-screen sticks but are happier with a keyboard, and their 3D maps are the largest loads on the page. Nothing here installs anything.

Sim pilots and everyone else

Two audiences meet on this shelf. Sim pilots want the approach, the crosswind and the graded landing, and there are enough airport and cockpit titles here to keep them busy; the simulators also tend to have the longest missions and the most patient pace. Everyone else wants the arcade end — a glide, a ring course, a dogfight that lasts a minute — and there is far more of that. Younger players usually do best with the paper planes, the cartoon helicopters and the ring courses; the combat games are loud, and their own pages say how loud.

The vehicle-with-a-job pace of the simulators continues in simulation games and their large maps in the 3D games hub; if the dogfights are the draw, gun games and first-person shooter games hold the ground war.

Are there real flight simulators in the browser?

Yes, within the limits of a browser: cockpit or chase views, pitch and roll, throttle, flaps on some, and a runway approach the game scores. They are lighter than a desktop simulator and load a large 3D map, but they teach the same habits: slow, flat and patient on the way down.

The arcade fliers — tilt to bank, one button to boost or fire — are made for it, and paper-plane glides and ring courses are portrait one-thumb games. Full simulators are playable on a tablet with on-screen sticks but are easier with a keyboard, and their maps take longer to load on mobile data.

Line up early, close the throttle most of the way and come down flat, nose slightly up, so the rear wheels touch first. Most games grade the landing on speed and angle, so a slow, boring approach scores better than a dramatic one.
