Most of the shelf is the space shooter — a ship at the bottom of the screen, waves of aliens or asteroids coming down, and a screen that fills with bullets by the third stage. It is the oldest arcade form there is, and the browser versions range from faithful retro to modern bullet storms with upgrades between runs. The second family is physics: landers where you feather the thrust against gravity, orbit puzzles where you slingshot a probe past planets, and rocket builders where the fun is watching your design tumble. The third is slower — mine a planet, grow a colony, watch the numbers climb while you are away.
The shooting end is a branch of the wider shooting games hub and, in its classic form, of arcade games; the planet miners and colony builders belong to the tick-over rhythm of idle games.
From one thumb to a full keyboard
A space shooter on a phone is a drag: the ship follows your finger and fires by itself, which is comfortable and forgiving. On a desktop the arrow keys or the mouse move the ship and a key fires, which is sharper but no longer automatic. Landers and orbit games are the opposite case — feathering a thrust key is far easier on a keyboard than on a virtual button, and the touch versions tend to simplify the physics to compensate. Builders and idle miners are tap menus and do not care what you play them on.
Expect pixel art and synth music more often than photo-real nebulae; the genre loves its arcade roots, and the retro games and pixel games shelves overlap with this one heavily. The rarer fully modeled ones — a cockpit, a station to dock at — take longer to load and want a mouse. If it is the flying itself you enjoy, the flying games shelf keeps the same controls closer to the ground.
Who space games suit and what to expect
Children get cartoon rockets, alien-matching puzzles and solar-system quizzes that teach the order of the planets; adults get the bullet storms, the idle empires and the occasional slow exploration game where you drift between stars and nothing shoots at you. Sessions are short in the shooters, endless in the idle builders, and somewhere between in the landers, where a single tricky descent can eat ten minutes. Do not expect real astronomy beyond the educational corner: the physics is tuned for fun, and sound travels in space here.
The quiz-and-planet-facts corner belongs with educational games; the mechanical crews and mech fights with robot games; the strand-you-on-a-planet survival titles with survival games. Fleet and base management, where you plan more than you fly, sits with strategy games.
