A game where you never touch the gas
In a running game the character moves forward on its own. You do not steer a speed; you react to what comes at you — a gap to jump, a barrier to slide under, a lane to switch into, a coin trail worth a small detour. The endless form has no finish line: the track keeps generating, the pace keeps rising, and the run ends at the first collision, so the score is how far you got. The level form does have an end, usually a chase or an obstacle course with a checkpoint or two, and a star rating for how cleanly you cleared it.
Courses that ask for precise jumps and let you stop, walk back and think belong to platformer games; free-running across rooftops with wall-runs and vaults is under parkour games; the single-button hop-and-dodge family lives with the rest of the arcade games.

Swipe on a phone, arrows on a keyboard
The genre grew up on touchscreens, and it shows. On a phone you swipe: left and right to change lanes, up to jump, down to slide, and the portrait layout puts the whole track under one thumb. On a keyboard the arrow keys do the same job and the space bar usually jumps; it is more precise, but the games were tuned for the slight delay of a swipe, so the desktop version can feel almost too easy until the speed climbs. Some side-view runners use only one input — tap or click to jump — and work identically everywhere.
Expect short sessions. A single run lasts a minute or three, there is rarely anything to save beyond a best distance and a coin total, and the coins buy costumes and head starts rather than new mechanics. Difficulty comes from speed, not from new rules, which is why the first ten seconds of a runner already tell you whether you like it.
Which kind of runner to pick
Three-lane track runners are the standard shape: a straight road, trains or trucks or carts to dodge, ramps and rails to ride. Side-view runners strip that down to jumping over pits and ducking under things. Crowd runners have you gather a growing group through gates and lose members to obstacles, which is more of a counting puzzle than a reflex test. Chase runners put something behind you — a guard, a dog, a wave — and turn the same inputs into an escape. Stick-figure runs are the lightest of all and load in a blink on an old phone.
Younger players do best with the cartoon crowd runners and the one-button hops, both of which forgive a late tap; the stick-figure courses are gathered under stickman games and the gentlest picks under kids games. If you want the run without the running, the rolling-ball courses under ball games use the same dodge-and-jump rhythm at a slower pace.
What is the difference between a running game and a platformer?

In a running game the character moves forward by itself and you only react — jump, slide, switch lanes. A platformer lets you stop, walk back and try a jump again, so it rewards planning as much as reflexes. Many runners borrow platformer level design, but if you can stand still it is a platformer.
Do running games work on a phone?

Better than almost any other genre. The swipe controls were designed for a touchscreen, and the portrait layout fits one hand. On a keyboard the arrow keys replace the swipes and feel slightly quicker to respond.
Are running games good for children?

Mostly yes. The cartoon track runners and crowd runners have no violence and a single control idea, and a failed run costs nothing but a restart. The chase runners can be tense for very young players, and a few titles show an ad between runs, so a quick look at the game page before handing over the phone is worth it.
