One element, many games

Water is a rule as often as it is a setting. In one game it is the thing that kills the fire character and carries the water one; in another it is colored liquid to pour between tubes until each tube holds a single shade; in a third it is a slide, a wave pool or a hose to aim. The label gathers everything tagged or named water plus the fire-and-water category, which is why the shelf holds temple platformers next to sorting puzzles next to jet skis.

The fire-and-water games deserve their own note. They are the classic two-character puzzle platformers where one hero walks through lava and the other through pools, and both must reach the exit; they were built for two players on one keyboard and are among the best-known entries in the two player games hub. Slides, boats and things with teeth

The action side of the shelf is set on the water rather than about it. Water park titles put you on a slide and ask you to lean into turns and stay on the flume, sometimes racing a crowd; jet-ski and speedboat games are the aquatic cousins of the racing shelf and live alongside boat games; and the fishing games are the quiet branch, a line, a wait and a catch. Then there is the branch where the water has teeth, and the shark games hub holds the ones where you are the predator.

Controls are as varied as the games: arrows and a partner's WASD for the co-op temples, tap-and-drag for the tube puzzles, tilt or arrows for the slides. The physics puzzles — route the water to the tap, fill the tank, put out the fire — use a pipe-and-valve logic that rewards drawing the whole path in your head before you cut the first channel. Phones suit the puzzles and slides; the co-op platformers want a keyboard and a friend.

Calm, silly and good for children

Water games are one of the gentlest shelves on the site. The sorting puzzles are meditative, the water park games are bright and silly, the co-op temples are a well-loved way for two children to play together, and even the shark games are cartoon violence. The physics puzzles are the closest thing here to homework and are quietly educational about how liquid flows. Nothing installs and nothing needs an account.
