A train cannot steer, so a train game is about everything else. The driver games hand you a throttle and a brake, a line of signals and a timetable, and reward stopping exactly at the platform. The track-laying puzzles show a train already rolling and a heap of curves and straights; you rotate and place pieces ahead of it before it runs out of rail. The dispatcher puzzles give you switches and several trains at once and ask you to route them past each other without a collision. Then there are the tycoon games, where the trains run themselves and you buy routes, and the toy-train cartoons, where a smiling engine collects animals along the way.
The driving and timetable side belongs with the rest of the simulation games; the track-laying and switching side with puzzle games; the route-and-profit side with idle tycoon games.

Because the throttle and brake are the whole control set, a driver game is one of the few simulations that plays as well on a phone slider as on a keyboard. What changes is the pace: a train takes a long time to stop, so you brake before you can see the platform, and a route between two stations can take several minutes at a scale speed. The track and switch puzzles are fast tap games in comparison and are at their best on a phone. The subway-line games sit in between — short hops, many stops, doors to open on the correct side.
Expect browser train simulators to be lighter than desktop ones: shorter routes, simpler physics, a cab view that is more picture than instrument panel.
