What an obby is

An obby is an obstacle course, and the word is a shortening of exactly that, spread by the user-built levels on a popular block-style creation platform where the format grew into a genre of its own. The rules are as simple as a playground: a start pad, a sequence of platforms, hazards that send you back to the last checkpoint, and a finish that is usually a door to the next stage.
