Where the noob came from

Noob is old gaming slang for a beginner who does not know the rules yet, and pro is the opposite; the noob-versus-pro pairing became a meme through video series set in blocky sandbox worlds, where a hapless new player and a skilled one attempt the same build or the same challenge and the gap between them is the joke. Browser developers picked up the two characters — one square, dopey face; one in sunglasses — and built games around them. This hub collects every title whose provider tag or name puts a noob on the box, and the sections below sort them by what you actually do.

The world is almost always cube-built. That places the hub next to the minecraft games shelf of blocky crafting and survival maps, the roblox games shelf of user-built courses, and the wider pixel games shelf that both belong to.

Parkour, escape and the zombie horde

Parkour is the biggest group: a blocky course of ledges, moving platforms and lava gaps, with the noob jumping his way to a flag while the pro either helps or watches. The escape games put the noob in a prison, a school or a monster's house and ask for keys and timing. Zombie stands hand him a shovel and a night to survive, while a wave of green cubes shuffles toward the door. There are also a few clicker and merge games where the noob is only a mascot, and running games where the joke is simply that he falls a lot.

Noob and pro on one keyboard

The best titles here are cooperative. One player steers the noob with WASD and the other the pro with the arrow keys, and the level is built so that neither can finish alone: the pro holds a button while the noob crosses, the noob is light enough to stand on a plate the pro would break. It is a good first co-op for a younger sibling and an older one, since the roles are already labeled. Solo play works too, with the game swapping control between the pair when needed.

On a phone the games add a joystick and a jump button, which handles parkour well and co-op badly; two people on one screen want a keyboard. Nothing installs.
