Capes, powers and a city to save

The appeal of a superhero game is the power fantasy at its simplest: you are stronger, faster or able to fly, and the city needs you. The label collects every title whose tag or name says hero or superhero, which produces a shelf that runs from web-slinging traversal and flying patrols to rooftop brawlers, tower defenders with a caped commander, and a surprising number of dress-up rooms where the mission is the outfit. Some are original characters invented by the studio; many are fan-made versions of famous ones.

About those famous ones: the games here come from licensed third-party providers and are fan-made or inspired titles, not official products of any comic publisher or film studio, and nothing here claims otherwise. They borrow a silhouette and a color scheme; the rest is the studio's own design. The web-slinger fan games gather under spiderman games, the dark-knight ones under batman games, and the flying strongman under superman games.

Swing, fly, punch or defend

Traversal games are the heart of the shelf. Swinging titles ask you to time a release at the top of the arc; flying games are simpler, a hold to climb and a release to dive, and both are usually endless runs through a skyline. The brawlers are closer to fighting games: a street, a wave of henchmen, a couple of attack buttons and a super move when the meter fills, sometimes for two players on one keyboard. Then there are the shooters, where a hero's power is a projectile and the rest is a side-scrolling gallery.

The quieter branch is strategy: a hero leads a squad through tower defense games or a lane battle, and the power is a cooldown rather than a reflex. Controls are the usual — arrows or WASD, a jump and an attack on the keyboard, big buttons on a phone — and the endless swing-and-fly games are the ones built for a thumb.
