House escape games
Locked in somebody's home: kitchens, attics and the key that is never where it should be.
Mystery escape games
A story to piece together as well as a door to open.
Locked in, and why that is fun
A room escape game is a single question: how do you get out? The room is a picture full of hotspots; you tap a drawer and find a key, a painting and find a number, a book and find the hint that ties the two together. Objects go into an inventory, combine with each other and open the next thing, and the final door wants the last code. The genre has a strong tradition of short, self-contained rooms, so a title often means a series with many rooms of rising difficulty, and a good one can be finished in a quarter of an hour.
This hub is the puzzle-only corner of the wider escape games hub, which also holds the horror escapes, prison breakouts and running-away titles. The searching part of the craft is shared with hidden object games, and the chase-free, story-led rooms overlap with adventure games.
Tap everything, then think
The control is tap or click, and the genre is genuinely at home on a phone: the rooms are still pictures, hotspots are large, and nothing needs speed. Pinch-to-zoom helps with small clues on a small screen, and landscape is the usual layout. On a desktop the mouse does the same, with the mild advantage that a hand does not cover the scene. Some rooms are text-heavy, with notes and diaries to read; the ones designed for a global audience keep the clues pictorial.
Hint systems vary from generous to absent. A game that gives a hint after a minute of no progress is kinder than it sounds, because escape rooms are famous for the one hotspot nobody finds. Progress within a room usually resets on reload; a series remembers which rooms are done.
Who the shelf suits
The genre rewards patience and attention rather than reflexes, which makes it a favorite for adults who want to think and for children who like being detectives; nothing here can be lost, only not yet solved. Two people looking at one screen is a legitimately better way to play, since a second pair of eyes finds the missed drawer. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants pace or for players who dislike being stuck, which the genre guarantees at least once per room.
Players who want the same searching with a fright attached will find it under horror games; those who want the logic without the room are the puzzle games hub's audience. Sessions are easy to plan: one room is a coffee break, a series is a weekend, and nothing needs finishing in one sitting except the room you are currently in.

Escape room games are the puzzle kind: a locked room, objects to find and combine, codes to crack, no enemies and no timer. The wider escape hub also holds horror escapes, prison breakouts and runner-style getaways; this hub keeps only the rooms.
Are room escape games scary?

Not the ones on this hub. They are quiet puzzles about drawers and padlocks, and a spooky setting is at most a mood. Games built to frighten are listed under horror games instead.

Tap every surface again, including the ones you already tried, and read every note twice; the missed hotspot is the genre's oldest trick. If the game offers a hint, use it — the puzzle after the hint is still yours to solve.
