Rallies, not laps

Tennis in a browser is a timing game. The ball comes over, you pick a moment and a direction, and the point is won or lost in the rhythm of the rally rather than in any single button. The label holds the full spread: 3D court games with a tournament ladder, serve choices and topspin; side-view arcade tennis where a single tap returns the ball and the challenge is placement; and table tennis, which plays faster, smaller and closer to a reflex test than anything on a full court.

Serve, return, place

On a keyboard the arrows move the player and one or two keys swing, with a longer press or a second key for a lob or a smash; the 3D games add a direction to the swing so the ball goes where you aimed rather than where you stood. The arcade titles reduce all of it to one input: tap when the ball is in the zone, and the aim comes from how early or late you tap. Table tennis is the same idea sped up, often with the paddle glued to the mouse or to a finger.

On a phone the swipe games are the natural fit — flick in the direction you want the ball to go — and the paddle games work well with a thumb. The full 3D matches ask for a landscape screen and a little patience while they load; nothing here needs an install, and most rounds are short enough for a single break.

Solo ladder or a second player

Most tennis games are single-player ladders: beat a run of opponents, each a little faster, until the trophy. The computer at the top of a ladder is usually beaten by patience — cross-court until it slips — rather than by power. A good share of the page also offers a second player on the same keyboard or the same screen, one paddle each, which is where table tennis really shines; those titles are collected under two-player games.

The cartoon and stick-figure courts suit younger players and have nothing to screen; the realistic 3D games are the ones to pick if you want to feel the difference between a slice and a topspin. If you came for another court sport, basketball games and soccer games are the busiest neighbors on the sports shelf.
