Slow to turn, hard to stop

A tank moves like nothing else in a shooting game. The hull turns slowly, the turret turns on its own, and the shell takes a moment to arrive, so every fight is about positioning before it is about aim. The label collects everything built around that feel: top-down arena battles where a few tanks bounce shells off the walls, side-view artillery duels where you set an angle and a power bar and wait to see where the shot lands, and 3D battlefields with cover, hills and a reload timer to respect.

The infantry-and-rifle end of the same fight is under shooting games and gun games; the historical campaigns with more than one vehicle type are under war games; and the browser arenas where you level a tank against strangers are gathered under io games.

Keyboard, mouse and the same couch

On a desktop the hull steers with WASD or the arrows and the turret follows the mouse, which is the layout that makes 3D tank battles work. The top-down arena games often use the keys for everything, and that is exactly why so many of them offer a second cluster of keys for a friend on the same keyboard — those are collected under two-player games. Artillery duels need only a mouse: drag for angle, release for power, and they are the calmest games on the page.

On a phone you get a movement stick on the left and a fire button or an aim stick on the right. It works, but hull-and-turret at once is a lot for two thumbs, so the artillery and top-down games are the better mobile picks and the big 3D battlefields are happier with a keyboard. No install is needed for any of them; the larger maps simply take longer to load.

Arena, artillery or defense

Arena games are the quick ones: a small map, walls to ricochet off, a match that lasts a minute and a rematch button. Artillery games are turn-based and thoughtful — wind, gravity and terrain change every shot, and a good lob over a hill is more satisfying than any headshot. The defense titles put you behind a line with waves rolling in and ask you to spend upgrades wisely between rounds; they share their bones with tower defense games and with the wider strategy games shelf.

Cartoon tanks and pixel shells dominate, so most of the page is fine for younger players; the realistic 3D battles are louder and grimmer, and their own pages say so. For fights with matchmaking and squads rather than one small arena, see multiplayer games.
