Sowing, harvesting and the loop that keeps you coming back
A farm game is a management loop with soil in it. You buy seed, plant a plot, wait for it to grow, harvest, sell, and spend the money on a bigger plot, a cow or a better tool. That loop is the entire genre, and the shelf differs only in how much of it is automated and how much the game asks of you. The active end is a simulation games title: you steer the tractor, plow the rows, choose crops for the season and manage a market that shifts.
The passive end belongs to idle games: fields harvest themselves, coins pile up while the tab is closed, and your job is to tap the upgrade that makes the next harvest larger. In between sit the town-builders and idle tycoon games, where the farm is one district of a growing business. Pick by how much attention you want to give: a simulator wants an evening, an idle farm wants a glance every hour.

Mouse, tap and the tractor's arrow keys
Most farm games are played with a mouse or a finger: click a plot to plant, drag a watering can, tap ripe crops to collect them, open the market to sell. They translate to a phone without losing anything and are, if anything, better on a tablet. The exceptions are the vehicle games, where you drive the tractor or the harvester yourself with the arrow keys and a phone gives you a steering wheel and pedals — closer to the truck games and car games hubs than to the fields around them.
Save systems vary. Many titles keep progress in the browser, so a returning player finds the farm as they left it; the idle ones even count the hours away. A few reset each session, and their pages say so. If you want the crop-tending feel without any long-term commitment, the casual games hub has the short farm puzzles that finish in a sitting.
Who farm games suit
People who want to relax. There is no enemy, no timer that matters much and no way to lose beyond a poor harvest, and the pace is set by the crops rather than the player. That makes the shelf a good fit for children — the animal games crossover is strong, with chickens, cows and sheep to feed — and for adults who like to build something slowly. The simulators reward planning; the idle farms reward patience; the vehicle games reward not driving into the fence.
The farm theme also skins a lot of puzzles: crop-matching boards, merge games where two seedlings make a tree, and harvest-then-cook chains that run into the cooking games hub. Those are farm games in look rather than in loop, and the sections above keep them visible without letting them crowd out the fields.

Most keep the farm in your browser, so it is there when you come back on the same device; the idle ones also count the time you were away. A few short titles reset each session, and their pages say so. Clearing browser data clears the farm.

Very. There is nothing to fight and nothing to lose in a hurry, the animals are cartoon-friendly and the controls are a tap. Younger children do well on the animal-feeding and harvest games; older ones enjoy the planning in a full simulator.
What is the difference between a farm game and a farming simulator?

Scale and attention. A simulator gives you the machinery, the seasons and a market to manage, and rewards planning an evening at a time. A farm game in the broader sense may be an idle field, a merge board or a tractor-parking level that borrows the theme without the management.
